Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast

A few Q&A's from Tom's week in Sorrento.

Q. What's a typical week like?
A. Most of our days were spent sightseeing, but towards the end of the holiday it was nice to have a chill out day! You definitely need a full day to see the Amalfi Coast, and in hindsight I wish we'd have gone back. Positano was stunning, but trying to see Amalfi and Ravello all in one day made things a bit rushed.

Q. How long to stay for?
A. We had a week, but I think 10 days would have allowed us to see things at a slower pace and maybe had an extra relaxing day.

Q. When to go?
A. I dislike crowds so chose late September - the weather was still very warm and Pompeii in particular was still very busy. It's always a trade off with the weather though - you can go in the winter months when it's much quieter, but you also get more rain as well as some cold days. Q. Where to stay?
A. We stayed at the Grand Hotel President - a decent enough 4 star hotel but a little out of town. Being within walking distance of Sorrento is very convenient for travelling around as well as finding a nice place to eat in the evening. If we went again, I'd be temped to stay either closer to the centre, or much further along the Amalfi Coast if it was to be a more relaxing holiday. Hotels along the coast can be expensive but the views are to die for. In Sorrento I'd recommend the imperial hotel Tramontano as a very good 4 star hotel, and the Grand Hotel Ambasciatori for a brilliant 5 star choice. Both are in fantastic locations and have always had great feedback from customers.
