The Ultimate tailor made holiday to South Africa

Cape Town - Winelands - Whale watching - Garden Route - Safari - beach extension

  • 5 nights in Cape Town
  • 2 nights in the Winelands
  • 1 night in Hermanus
  • 2 nights in Kynsna
  • 1 night in Port Elizabeth
  • 3 nights at Shamwari Game Reserve
  • Plus extensions to Dubai or Mauritius

Total: 14 nights + extensions

Cape Town (5 nights)

Lying between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Town has one of the most beautiful settings in the world. I would suggest a 5 night stay, which remember gives you 4 full days, allowing a day on Table Mountain, a day at the beach, a day out to Cape Point, and a day either visiting Robben Island or wandering around the waterfront.

What to do...

  • Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain , or if you're feeling energetic, walk to the top!
  • There are some lovely walks from the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on Table Mountain
  • Spend a day at Boulders Beach to see the penguins
  • Visit Cape Point - where the Atlantic meets the Indian Ocean
  • Tour Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held
  • Stroll down the impressive Victoria and Albert Waterfront - a great place to stop for dinner, with shops, museums, theatres, restaurants and cafes all in a stunning setting
  • See blue cranes at Overberg
  • Take a boat trip to Seal Island

Hotel Choices

  • Standard
  • Superior
  • Boutique
  • Deluxe
  • Some hotels are particularly suited to families

Winelands (2 nights)

COLLECT YOUR HIRE CAR AS YOU LEAVE CAPE TOWN

The winelands are only an hour's drive from Cape Town, and be easily been seen on a day trip if you don't want to drive. However there are some wonderful towns and villages here, and together with the amazing food, if you can it is worth spending a night or two here.

What to do...

  • Explore the historic town of Stellenbosch before setting off to sample the world class wines at one of the many vineyards surrounding the town. Most vineyards have fantastic restaurants too.
  • There are several wonderful mountain bike trails around the vineyards
  • Have a meal in the charming village of Franschhoek - the food here is the best in South Africa!

Hotel Choices

  • Superior
  • Deluxe
  • Some hotels are particularly suited to families

Distances

  • Only an hour's drive from Cape Town

Hermanus (1 night)

Hermanus is the whale watching capital of South Africa, but they are only here between June and November. Even if you are out of season, the town is worth a stop with its quaint boutiques, galleries and craft markets. It is also good for the cliff top walks which take you past little bays, coves and lovely beaches.

What to do...

  • Whale watching - best from June to November
  • Visit the Fernkloof Nature Reserve with a huge variety of flora
  • Take one of the cliff top walks - between June and November, you will see whales from the cliffs

Hotel Choices

  • Superior
  • Boutique
  • Deluxe

Distances

  • Only one and a half hours from the Winelands
  • Similarly, if you came straight from Cape Town it is only about an hour and a half to get to Hermanus

Knysna (2 nights)

The drive to Knysna from Hermanus is one of the most beautiful journeys in Africa. From Hermanus, I recommend taking Route 62 from Montagu and continuing until your reach Oudtshoorn, and then heading south to the coast via George and over the spectacular Seven Passes road until you get to Knysna.

You'll be driving past spectacular mountain passes, wineries, rivers, fruit orchards before descending into the vast semi-arid desert landscapes of the Little Karoo.

What to do...

  • Visit the vast and dramatically lit Cango Caves just north of Oudtshoorn, before you reach Knysna
  • Enjoy spectacular walks - behind the town are thick forests which have several good walking trails
  • Take a ride on the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam train - note: you will probably need to stay an extra night in Knysna
  • See the small herd of elephants at Knysna Elephant Park
  • Further on from Knysna towards Port Elizabeth are a number of attractions that are worth a stop such as Monkeyland (a reserve for recently released primates), Birds of Eden, an enormous dome housing African birds in a rainforest setting), and ocean safaris to see dolphins, otters, seals and whales

Hotel Choices

  • Standard
  • Superior
  • There is also a selection of boutique and deluxe hotels a little further on at Plettenberg Bay
There are places along the route to Knysna where you may wish to stop for the night to break the journey - for example in Oudtshoorn which is a beautiful area in its own right.

Distances

  • Hermanus to Knysna is about 300 miles by the scenic route, and takes 6-7 hours.

Port Elizabeth (1 night)

Port Elizabeth is a good base to spend a night after you have finished the garden route before heading onwards. For something a bit special, there is a lovely charming seaside village called St. Francis Bay which is on the way to Port Elizabeth. You'll get here an hour earlier, and tomorrow will be an hour extra.

Hotel Choices

  • Standard
  • Superior
  • There is also a boutique option at St. Francis Bay

Distances

Knysna to Port Elizabeth is about 160 miles and takes roughly 3 hours

Shamwari Game Reserve (3 nights)

Shamwari is situated in some of the most beautiful landscape of the Eastern Cape, and is completely malaria free, and home to the big 5.

Game viewing here is considered exceptional, as to are the guides, and when you combine this with high standards of accommodation, it is no wonder that Shamwari is one of our favourite game reserves in Africa.

DROP OFF YOUR HIRE CAR ON ARRIVAL AT PORT ELIZABETH AIRPORT

What to do...

  • See the big 5 on game drives
  • Have a spa treatment at one of the relaxation retreats
  • Visit one of the 2 Big Cat Sanctuaries which cares for rescued big cats
  • Take part in one of the guided game walks

Hotel Choices

  • Shamwari is a luxury option with a choice of accommodations which we will be happy to discuss with you
  • Alternative lodge accommodation is available in other game reserves

Distances

  • Port Elizabeth to Shamwari is an hour's drive

Extensions

  • Mauritius - extend your holiday with a week or so on the island of Mauritius. We have a large selection of hotels from 3* to 5* deluxe.
  • Dubai - Add on a few days in Dubai either before or after your holiday in South Africa - we have a large selection of hotels either on the beach or in the city where prices tend to be cheaper.
