An example itinerary allowing you to see the best places in New Zealand without too much driving

2 nights in Hong Kong

What to do...

  • Take a tram up to Victoria Peak to see the stunning panorama of Hong Kong Island
  • Enjoy a trip on the century old Star Ferry to Kowloon to view Hong Kong's magnificent skyline
  • See the Lantau Island Buddha which is the world's largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha
  • Visit the famous markets such as Temple Street, Nathan Road or Ladies Market
  • Find excellent restaurants and bars at Lan Kwai Fong
  • Stroll through the ornate Wong Tai Sin temple for a taste of traditional life
  • See the spectacular and free harbour lights show
  • Take a harbour cruise and enjoy some of the best views of the city
A couple of nights at the beginning is a good way to break your journey. Here I have used Hong Kong as an example, but you can choose from several stopover cities such as Bangkok and Singapore amongst others.

2 nights in Auckland

What to do...

  • Eat in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Skytower
  • If you're not scared of heights, try the Skywalk experience
  • See King penguins at the Antarctic Encounter
  • Get a scuba diver's view at Underwater World
  • Visit the Auckland Botanic Gardens
  • Sail on a yacht such as the Pride of Auckland coffee cruise
  • Climb Auckland Harbour Bridge for a fantastic photo oportunity at the summit
  • Stroll along Auckland harbour and try out the bars, cafes and restaurants or take a harbour cruise
If you are on a self drive holiday, I often find it easier to hire a car when leaving the first city rather than taking one straight away at the airport.

3 nights at the Bay of Islands

What to do...

  • Includes time for the Small Ship Overnight Cruise
  • Cruise through the famous 'Hole in the Rock'
  • Travel to Cape Reinga, the very North of New Zealand and Ninety Mile Beach
  • Swim with dolphins in New Zealand's warmest waters (please note 90% success rate)
  • See the 26m high Whangarei Falls along the way
  • Take a scenic flight over the Bay of Islands and up to Cape Reinga
This is actually the one part of your road trip that involves coming back on yourself, and therefore if you are short of time you may prefer to miss this part of the itinerary out.

Distances

  • Auckland to Bay of Islands - 150 miles

2 nights on the Coromandel Peninsula

What to do...

  • Dig your own hot bubbling spa pool at Hot Water Beach
  • Relax on one of the many sandy beaches, or go diving or surfing
  • Visit the goldrush centre of Thames

Distances

  • Bay of Islands to Coromandel Peninsula - 215 miles
  • Auckland to Coromandel Peninsula - 70 miles

2 nights at Waitomo

What to do...

  • Experience the magic of an underground boat ride to see millions of glowworms in the grotto
  • Abseiling, climbing and walking in the caves
  • See kiwis at the Kiwi House and Bird Park

Distances

  • Coromandel Peninsula to Waitomo - 105 miles
  • Auckland to Waitomo - 120 miles

What to do...

  • See all vibrant colours of the 1930's the art-deco buildings
  • Visit the gannet sanctuary (November to March)
  • Go wine tasting on one of the many tours
I have included this stop because it's a fairly long drive down to Wellington from Rotorua (about 6 hours) however another possible route would be to drive from Rotorua to Waitomo, seeing Waitomo after Rotorua, leaving your hire car in nearby Hamilton, and then taking the train down to Wellington. This gives you a chance to put your feet up for a few hours.

Distances

  • Rotorua to Hawke's Bay - 140 miles

2 nights in Wellington

What to do...

  • From the top of Mount Victoria admire the amazing views of the city and harbour
  • See kiwis at the Kaiori Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Book a walking food tour
  • Stroll along the beachfront at Oriental Parade
  • Visit the superb Te Papa national museum
  • Visit the seal colony and lighthouse at Cape Palliser (85 miles away)
After your stay in Wellington, take the three hour ferry across to Picton on the South Island. You will save a considerable amount of money by leaving your car in Wellington and picking up a new one on the other side. In fact, you might as well drop it off as soon as you arrive in Wellington. The ferry is well equipped an even has a cinema on board!

Distances

  • Hawke's Bay to Wellington - 195 miles
  • Rotorua to Wellington - 280 miles

2 nights in the Marlborough Sounds

What to do...

  • Walk the Queen Charlotte Track for tremendous views
  • Go kayaking around the sheltered coves
  • Cruise the bays of the Queen Charlotte Sound
  • Enjoy a wine tour (no driving) of Marlborough
For serious walkers, there is a 4 day guided walk of the Queen Charlotte Track, however some of the best parts can be walked in a day. You start with a cruise to Ship Cove, and then a five hour walk. There are many breathtaking views along the way of the Marlborough Sound.

Distances

  • Ferry to hotel - depends on the hotel, but most are only a short drive away from the ferry terminal

3 nights in Abel Tasman

There are several other adventure type activities in Queenstown such as skydiving from a plane, canyon swinging, jet boating, fly fishing and hand gliding, and rafting, to name but a few. Alternatively you could just enjoy Queenstown's beautiful setting, especially from Bob's Peak.

Overnight Milford Sound Cruise

What to do...

  • Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound overnight cruises
  • Doubtful Sound day cruise
  • Walk the Milford Track (about 5 hours)

On board the Milford Mariner, accompanied by a nature guide, you will cruise the full length of this spectacular fiord out to the Tasman Sea. The leisurely pace allows plenty of time to view the thundering waterfalls, mountains and wildlife. You can either explore in the tender craft and kayaks or simply relax on deck.
