We rate Le Canonnier as the best 4 star option on Mauritius. The beaches here are superb, and its West coast location means that the seas are calm and the weather good. With Grand Baie and Port Louis just a short ride away, you are never too far from places to see.

There is an inviting pool with lots of sunbeds and a bar close by. But for total relaxation try a relaxing massage at the spa which is built in to a banyan tree.

Although the basic board package is half-board, there is an excellent value all-inclusive package and indeed most of our customers choose to go all-inclusive. You are also entitled to dine at Le Cannonier's sister hotel in Grand Baie, Le Mauricia which means you have another couple of restaurants to choose from.

In summary then, this hotel has a huge amount of character - you will see the original cannons which the hotel is named after, and even the children's club is situated inside an 18th century lighthouse. There are three wonderful beaches, a superb West Coast location just 3 miles from Grand Baie, good dining options and a great value all-inclusive package.

Rooms

All rooms at Le Canonnier are beautifully appointed and furnished in a tropical Mauritian style, featuring natural colours and natural woods. They are all air-conditioned with mini-bar, hair dryer, TV, safe and radio channels.

• Standard rooms have an en-suite shower and feature either a private terrace or balcony with garden or ocean views
• Standard Sea Facing rooms also include a bath with overhead shower
• Superior rooms are larger and feature an en-suite bath and separate shower with either garden or ocean views. We recommend upgrading to these rooms if you have a child as there is more space to fit the extra bedding
• Honeymoon Suites are the most romantic choice - they have a great location at the tip of the resort and offer extra spacious accommodation. Please book early!
• Family Apartments offer fantastic space with two spacious en-suite bedrooms. All are situated in the gardens and feature a large terrace or balcony.

Restaurants

• Le Frangipanier - the main restaurant surrounded by coconut palms to create a tropical ambience. Themed buffets are served in the evening.
• Le Navigator - set in an old colonial building, looking out over the lush gardens to the sea
• Dine at Le Mauricia as part of your half board or all-inclusive package - there are two restaurants at Le Mauricia which is in Grand Baie and so is perfect if you fancy visiting a few bars afterwards
• Le Planteur - drinks and snacks are available in the hotel bar which is located in the gardens

Trips and Excursions

• Port Louis - a colourful central market and lively waterfront, with plush air-conditioned shops, multi screen cinema, casino, racecourse and an 1830’s country house.
• Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens - one of the world's oldest botanical gardens include huge giant waterlillies, the aromas of herbs & spices, a 200 year old Buddha tree, and giant Aldabra tortoises.
• Grand Baie - a great place for shopping and relaxing in cafes.
• Walk with lions experience - a once in a lifetime chance to take a walk with lions
• Black River Gorges National Park - in the interior of Mauritius, this is a beautiful mountainous area to explore with fantastic scenery, waterfalls. There is also a superb drive along the coast.
• Grand Bassin - a sacred Hindu Lake resting in the crater of a natural volcano – each March, most of the island’s population come here to worship.
• La Vanille crocodile park - plus giant tortoises, monkeys, deer, bats, giant land crabs and lizards.
• Casela Bird Park - see parrots, pheasants, rare pink pigeons, leopards, tigers, lemurs, monkeys and deer. There are also great views across the valley.
• Chamarel - known as ‘coloured earths’, this is a moon-like landscape where the earth ranges in colour from purple to deep orange. There is also a 330ft waterfall, with a restaurant with stunning views.
• Cruising - there will be full day luxury catamaran cruising with stops for swimming and snorkeling and a delicious barbecue lunch. Other boat trips include a trip to Coconut island and a dolphin sanctuary, deep sea fishing etc.
• Domaine Du Chasseur - a nature park with deer, monkeys, rare birds, wild boar in forest surroundings plus a restaurant
• Blue Safari Submarine - descends to 35 meters below sea level for spectacular views of marine life
