Europe and the Mediterranean

3 nights in Istanbul + 11 nights in one of Turkey's beach resorts

Istanbul is one of the most interesting and atmospheric cities in the world, which is why it makes such as good combination with a stay on one of Turkey's beach resorts. Highlights are the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque and drinking a traditional Turkish coffee. There are many cruises allowing you to enjoy the fabulous skyline.

Then head to the seaside village of Essaouira, about 3 hours away, with its relaxed atmosphere and long sweeping beach.

When you're in Marrakech, it's worth spending a day in the Atlas Mountains as the scenery is superb, and the tiny villages you pass through make a great contrast to Marrakech.

& 5* Sofitel Essaouira, bed & breakfast

Best for:   atmosphere     culture     shopping

When to go?   All year round - July and August are hot

3 nights in Kuala Lumpur + 7 nights in Langkawi

Start your holiday with a couple of days in Kuala Lumpur visiting the Chinese Temple, caves, and King's Palace. Stroll around the beautiful parks and gardens and enjoy the views from the Petronas Twin Towers.

Langkawi is a laid back tropical island in the Andaman Sea, a short flight from Kuala Lumpur, and boasting some of the world's most beautiful beaches. If you can tear yourself away from the white sand beach, then there is a tropical rainforest to explore, as well as excellent snorkeling and diving in the National marine Park.

Suggested hotels:   4* Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, bed & breakfast
& 5* Andaman, Langkawi, bed & breakfast

Best for:   culture     shopping

When to go?   Best time for Langkawi is December to April.

4 nights in Bangkok + 10 nights in Krabi

Bangkok is perhaps the most exciting city in Asia with a wealth of cultural sights. Top of the list is the enchanting Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Visit the unique floating markets and the riverside temples of Wat Arun and Wat Pho before taking a relaxing boat ride to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya. At night there is the famous night market, or take one of the many river dinner cruises.

To many people, Krabi is the best of Thailand's resorts due to the dramatic picture postcard scenery, soft white sandy beaches, and laid back lifestyle. It's where you'll see the iconic huge limestone cliffs soaring out of the turquoise sea. The main tourist area Ao Nang has a few local bars and restaurants, although most of the hotels are a short distance away.

A visit to one of the offshore islands in a long-tailed boat is a must - you will see the most beautiful beaches and have a chance to snorkel amongst tropical fish in the crystal clear waters. One of these islands is uninhabited, and it is here that the movie 'The Beach' was filmed in the Phi Phi islands.

Krabi Town is worth a visit for the night market, as well as just wandering round this charming little town. More energetic is a climb of Tiger Monastery, where is it possible to get to the top for spectacular views.

Suggested hotels:   4.5* Royal Orchid Sheraton, bed & breakfast
& 5* Centara Grand Beach, Krabi, bed & breakfast

Best for:   atmosphere     culture     shopping

When to go?   Best time for Langkawi is December to April.

Borneo has a handful of excellent beach hotels, including one that even has its own orang utan sanctuary. Suggested hotels:   4* Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, bed & breakfast
& 5* Rasa Ria, Borneo, bed & breakfast

Suggested hotels:   5* Grand Hyatt Dubai, bed & breakfast
& 4* Travancore Heritage, Kerala

Best for:   scenery     atmosphere     culture     shopping

When to go?   November to March.

3 nights in Hong Kong + 10 nights in Bali

As there are no direct flights to Bali from the UK, you must change planes somewhere, and why not Hong Kong? Highlights include a tram ride to the top of Victoria Peak for spectacular views, a cruise on the harbour - even better if you go on a traditional Chinese junk, shopping in the markets or the modern malls, and eating in some of the traditional restaurants of Kowloon.

Bali is mainly a beach holiday, but why not get out for a few days and visit Monkey Forest which is home to hundreds of monkeys, or the arty town of Ubud, known for its art, music and dance, all set in a dramatic landscape.

Suggested hotels:   Langham Place, Hong Kong
& 4.5* Bali Hyatt, bed & breakfast

Best for:   culture     shopping

When to go?   The driest months are April to October / November. In other months you will still get lots of sunshine and clear blue skies, but also heavy tropical showers.

3 nights Singapore + 4 nights Bintan

Singapore is a colourful modern city with plenty to see and do. Highlights include Chinatown, Raffles Hotel, the Botanical Gardens and the superb night safari where a tram takes you through jungle habitats before your walking tour starts.

Meanwhile a high speed catamaran ride away is the lovely tropical island of Bintan, a great place to find excellent hotels, spas, soft sandy beaches and golf courses.

Suggested hotels:   Pan Pacific, bed & breakfast
& Angsana Bintan, bed & breakfast

Best for:   culture     shopping

When to go?   All year round.

6 nights touring Vietnam + 6 nights Vietnam Beach

Start your trip in Hanoi and visit the 'House on Stilts' presidential palace, and the scenic Halong Bay.

Then head South to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. Visit the historical Cu Chi Tunnels, the Chinese district, and take a boat trip on the Mekong Delta.

Vietnam has an abundance of golden beaches and relatively uncommercialised beach resorts which make a relaxing end to your trip.

Suggested hotels:   Hilton Hanoi and Sheraton Saigon, both bed & breakfast
& Victoria Ho An Beach Resort , bed & breakfast

Best for:   scenery     culture

When to go?   January to August is the dry season for Vietnam's beaches, whereas Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are dry between October and May.

7 nights Kenya Safari + 7 nights Kenya Beach

See the big 5 on a seven night Kenya safari, staying in wonderful lodges and camps in ideal locations. A seven night safari includes a variety of game parks allowing you to see a big variety of animals.

There are many excellent hotels on the beach, ranging from 4* resort style hotels to tiny luxury treehouses.

Suggested hotels:   Kenya safari visiting Samburu, Aberdares, Lake Naivasha, Masai Mara, full board
& 4* Pinewood Village, Mombasa, All Inclusive

Best for:   scenery     wildlife

When to go?   The main months to avoid are April to the early part of June when it is monsoon season and wildlife viewing becomes more difficult.

Middle East

7 night tour of Jordan + Dead Sea extension

This is probably the best Jordan tour - you start in Amman, visiting Jerash and the Citadel, before heading down the King's Highway to see the mosaic map, Mount Nebo, and the crusader castle. But the real highlight is the 3 nights at Petra which includes 'Petra by Candlelight', an atmospheric evening right in front of the Treasury building.

The tour includes a couple of nights relaxing on the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, where you can float in the sea. Many people choose to add a couple extra days here - there are some fine hotels, good restaurants and a good beach.

Suggested hotels:   Tour of Jordan visiting Amman & Petra
& 5* Kempinski Dead Sea, bed & breakfast

Best for:   scenery     iconic attractions

When to go?   All year round. July and August are very hot during the day. In winter it can be cold at night so wrap up warm for the 'Petra by Candlelight' experience.

9 nights in Taba Heights + 5 nights in Jordan

This is a beach holiday in the relaxed resort of Taba Heights, on Egypt's Red Sea, with 5 nights in the middle spent in Jordan.

The first two nights are in Petra with entrance to the site included. Then you head up to the Dead Sea for a further 3 nights, for a once in a lifetime experience. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth, and the extreme saltiness of the water means you float rather than swim. There are several good restaurants, a nice beach and spa, but one thing you must do is to take a mud treatment (it's free, and fantastic for your skin!).

Suggested hotels:   5* Marriott Taba Heights, Half Board
& 4.5* Marriott Dead Sea and 4.5* Marriott Petra, both Half Board

Best for:   scenery     iconic attractions

When to go?   All year round. July and August are hot in Egypt and Jordan.

5 nights in Dubai + 5 nights in Oman

This is a very interesting combination as it combines the desert city of Dubai with Oman, which in many ways is how Dubai used to be a few decades ago. Dubai has many luxury hotels both on Jumeirah Beach and in the city, as well as modern malls, traditional souks, cruises, walks, cafes and restaurants. One of the best trips is the sunset desert safari which usually includes a camel ride!

Oman is different; much more traditional, relaxed, quieter but still with some interesting sights. There are many old forts dotted around the country, while the souk in Muscat is a fascinating place to wander around, looking for frankincense, and there are many fantastic dive spots too.

Suggested hotels:   5* Grand Hyatt Dubai, bed & breakfast
& 5* The Chedi, Oman, bed & breakfast

Best for:   scenery     atmosphere     culture     shopping

When to go?   The best deals and lowest hotel rates are in our summer, but this is also the hottest time to go. Temperatures can reach the high 30's, albeit a dry heat.

Caribbean

3 nights in Havana + 7 nights in Varadero

The most fascinating city in the Caribbean is Havana, Cuba, and now is the time to go while it still has a unique 1950's feel to it, especially the old American cars, the Havana cigars and the old fashioned shops and cafes.

Then head a couple of hours away to Varadero's fine sandy beaches and one of the many fine all-inclusive resorts that are spread along this coast.

Suggested hotels:   3* Ambos Mundos, bed & breakfast
& 5* Paradisus Varadero, All inclusive

Best for:   atmosphere     culture     shopping

When to go?   All year round. Some tropical showers between May and October.

4 nights in Boston + 4 nights on Cape Cod

Your trip begins with a few days in Boston, one of America's most historic and beautiful cities. As it's fairly compact with an excellent public transport system, you can easily forget the car for now!

Start by walking the Freedom Trail which takes you on a journey through America's past, and enjoy delightful cobbled streets, little squares and wonderful shopping. There is also Harvard University, the JFK museum, the pavement cafes of Newbury Street and the Victorian like Beacon Hill.

Cape Cod is where you come to relax and enjoy fine dining, a bit of whale watching and maybe having a spa treatment.

Suggested hotels:   5* Fairmont Copley Plaza
& 3* Cape Codder Resort & Spa, bed & breakfast

Best for:   iconic attractions     shopping

When to go?   May to October are the warmer months.
