- Visit the famous Mount Etna volcano which is still active - most of the year it is snow capped and smoke billows from the crater - you can either drive from Taormina or take one of the many tours. When you get there, buses take you up to 2000m and from there you can walk up to the hot lava or take a jeep.
- Enjoy eating out in local restaurants and the wonderful food and ambience - there is plenty of choice in both Taormina and Castelmola (easy to get to if staying at Villa Sonia) - some hotels (for example Villa Sonia) . have a semi-half board where you eat in the hotel for a few nights, and are free to eat out the other nights
- Take the cable car down to the beach near Taormina
- Enjoy a mini-cruise to the Aeolian Islands - there are nine volcanic islands to the North of Sicily including Lipari which has an impressive Spanish castle, Stromboli where volcanic eruptions occur daily, and Volcano where you can have a therapeutic soak in the active thermal springs
- Visit the preserved roman city of Syracuse which has a rock carved theatre and was the venue for gladiator fights
- Visit the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento including the mosaics of the Roman Villa of Casale
